Den Day at Hollywood - Raised £539.38
What a fantastic time we had taking part in Save the Children’s Den Day. The whole school including Hollywood Pre-school had the chance to design and build dens whilst raising money to make life better for children around the world.
In preparation for the event, School Council did a presentation in assembly and made posters to advertise it. They told us the aims for the day – to raise money, work together and have fun.
The day started with the challenge to build a structure in a group that could stand by itself. We used branches with tarpaulins or material and others used cardboard boxes. Some of us started our dens in the classrooms and then moved them out into the playground. This was quite tricky – we had lots of repairs to do and there were a few arguments but we had to work together to get the den standing. Lots of us had the opportunity to work with Mr Kelley who worked his magic around the fire pit and we also found out that he’s really good at making Smores too!
Of course this event had a serious side too and we learned important facts about the world around us. We found out about the causes and effects of natural disasters and how children in less fortunate circumstances are forced to live.
In the afternoon, Margaret Wells from Save the Children came to visit and looked at all of our masterpieces. She was amazed at how we had used our imaginations to transform our classrooms and playground. Margaret was so impressed that she has asked if she can include us in a regional Save the Children magazine. We also had a visit from Reverend Rebecca and Barbara who popped in to see what was happening all over Hollywood. A special thank you to the parents and ex pupils who came in to help us during the day – we hope you enjoyed yourself.
This was the first time Hollywood have taken part in Den Day and it was a day we will always remember!
